A Dental crown is a tooth shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. It is type of dental restoration that completely encases or encircles the visible portion of a tooth or Dental implant, when cemented into place.

Indications

  • Restoration of weak tooth structure: To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
  • Strengthen: To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth structure left
  • Support: To hold a Dental bridge in place
  • Enhance aesthetics: To cover misshaped or severely discoloured teeth
  • To cover a Dental Implant
  • To make a cosmetic modification.

Types of Crowns.

Pre-fabricated Stainless steel crowns are used on permanent teeth primarily as a temporary measure in order to restore/ protect severely decayed tooth and in primary teeth in order to restore severely decayed tooth / protect them from further decay. more cost- effective than custom-made crowns and prophylactic Dental care needed to protect a tooth without a crown.

Permanent crowns can be made from stainless steel, all metal (such as gold or another alloy), porcelain-fused-to-metal or all ceramic.
