Oral Surgery

The treatment and management of some of the dental problems might require few oral surgical procedures. It is not something to be afraid of, as, anesthetics are given to numb the sensations temporarily so that the patient does not feel much pain while the dentist operates on them. Thus, by the time their surgery gets over, they get rid of chief trouble that brought them to the clinic.

Common oral surgery procedures:

Here are some of the common oral surgical procedures that most of the people might require to get, at some point in their lives:

1. Tooth extraction

In cases where the normal extraction cannot be performed due to multiple factors like accessibility, morphology of tooth and surrounding structures, a surgical extraction is advised. This involves the oral surgeon making an incision into the patient's gums so to surgically expose the tooth in order to extract it. It can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending upon multiple factors. The most common causes of extraction include severe tooth decay, damage and infection etc.

2. Dental implants

Implants are a popular tool to replace missing teeth, and their installation requires oral surgery. The implant is a rod or screw that is surgically inserted into the patient's jaw. They are usually made up of titanium, but sometimes of other materials as well, like zirconium. A crown needs to be attached to the implant, once it is placed or after waiting up to period of six months (for fusion of surrounding bonetissue), depending upon the type of implant used and the health of the patient's jaw.

3. Bone grafting

This is surgical procedure that uses transplanted bone to repair and rebuild diseased or damaged bones usually indicated when patient does not have sufficient jaw bone tissue. Bone loss/defect can be the consequence of failure to get replacement of missing tooth at right time or due to any dental condition that deteriorates jawbone tissue. Bone grafting is also indicated when a patient wants implants but lacks the bone tissue needed to support the oral prosthesis in place.

4. Corrective Jaw Surgery

Also known as ‘orthognathic surgery’, it is done to fix a variety of minor and major dental and skeletal irregularities, like a misaligned jaw. The procedure can drastically improve the patient's ability to breathe, speak and chew properly. Along with improved functions, the patient’s confidence and aesthetics also get better.

5. Sleep apnea treatment

Surgery is sometimes needed to address sleep apnea. This condition involves obstruction in breathing while the person is asleep. It leads to interruptions in their sleep cycle as their body wakes them up in order to get enough air and restore their breathing.

Surgery can be used to remove excess soft tissues that may be blocking a patient's airways. This can provide the patient with permanent cure for certain types of sleep apnea

6.Cyst enucleationleation

A dental cyst is a closed sac that can be made up of air, soft tissue, or fluid that forms next to or around teeth. Enucleation has been most effective and reliable method to treat cysts. It involves removal of cyst and it’s contents. It may occur due to infection, disease of the gum tissue etc.

7.Fractures:

Any severe trauma can lead to maxillofacial fractures. An appropriate treatment plan is essential to reconstruct the damaged structures. Favorable results are provided by interdisciplinary approaches and appropriate surgical treatments

Congenital defects:

Various oral and maxillofacial defects like cleft palate and cleft lip can be surgically treated in order to improve the appearance and functioning of oral structures.
