All ceramic dental crowns

All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide better natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. All-ceramic crowns can be used for front and back teeth.

Advantages

  • Esthetics : made of translucent porcelain, they reflect light and look almost exactly like your natural teeth
  • Strength and durability: The material provides high-strength and is resistant to breakage
  • Precision : Restorations are precision-fitted, so margins are extremely accurate. All-ceramic crowns generally will fit right the first time, with no adjustments needed as fabrication is not temperature sensitive
  • Lesser Hypersensitivity They are resistant to hot and cold, which reduces hypersensitivity
  • Lesser tooth preparation is required
  • Solid zirconia is suitable for bruxers due to its durability and in cases with less clearance for layering.
  • They can mask underlying tooth discoloration, implant abutments, and metal cores.
  • Gum recession will not affect the esthetics, and marginal discoloration will be avoided.

Disadvantages:

  • 1. Cost: All ceramic crowns and bridges are more expensive compared to metallic counterparts.
  • 2. Durability and Strength: Although all ceramic restorations have proven to be strong and durable but compared to metal they are still not as strong and durable.
  • 3. All cermic crowns require special cement for cementation moreover, various ceramic types of all ceramic restorations demand different surface treatments before cementation. choosing and applying the appropriate surface treatment and cementation procedure will contribute to long-lasting restorations.whereas PFM crown is placed on the tooth with cement just like a gold crown is placed.
  • 4. Long span all ceramic bridges are more prone to fractures than metal framework based PFM bridges.
